Oral Care Tips from a Dentist
When it comes to oral care, any general dentist will tell you that details matter. While brushing and flossing are essential, you may be missing key steps that can significantly affect your dental health. Therefore, dentists emphasize the importance of consistent oral hygiene practices, proper techniques, and professional care to prevent common dental issues and maintain strong teeth and healthy gums.
Proper brushing technique
Twice daily brushing is a cornerstone of oral care, but technique is just as important as frequency. Patients should brush at a 45-degree angle to the gumline and use small circular motions to clean all teeth surfaces. At the same time, it is important to avoid aggressive brushing, as it can lead to gum recession and enamel wear. Additionally, dentists recommend using a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste, as these are gentle on enamel and effective at removing plaque. Finally, a toothbrush typically needs replacing about every three to four months.
Take the time to floss
Flossing at least once a day is vital in preventing gum disease by removing food particles and plaque a toothbrush may miss. Dentists recommend their patients use about 18 inches of dental floss, gently sliding it between the teeth and curving it around each tooth in a C-shape. For those who find traditional floss challenging, dentists suggest alternatives such as floss picks, water flossers, or interdental brushes.
What about mouthwash?
Though it should not replace brushing and flossing, mouthwash can benefit an oral health routine. Dentists recommend using an antibacterial or fluoride mouthwash to reduce bacteria, strengthen enamel, and freshen breath. Swish the mouthwash for at least 30 seconds after brushing and flossing for optimal results.
Diet matters too
What people eat also has a significant impact on their dental health. Sugary and acidic foods can erode enamel and increase cavity risk. Therefore, dentists advise limiting these items and opting for dental-friendly foods instead. For example, dairy products such as cheese, yogurt, apples, carrots, and celery stimulate saliva production, helping to wash away food particles and neutralize acids. Staying hydrated is important, too, as water not only benefits overall health but also helps rinse away debris and maintain saliva flow.
Visit your dentist regularly
Because routine dental appointments are essential to oral care, dentists recommend scheduling one every six months. These visits help detect issues like cavities, gum disease, or oral cancer early when they are more treatable. Additionally, professional cleanings remove hardened plaque (tartar) that brushing and flossing cannot eliminate. Also, at these appointments, a general dentist can recommend additional preventive and protective treatments such as mouthguards to protect the teeth from trauma or wear and dental sealants to provide extra protection agains tooth decay.
